From Paper Run Sheets to Digital Operations: How Tully Sugar Modernised Fleet Coordination with Strike’s Support.

As one of Australia's largest sugar mills, Tully Sugar Limited plays a vital role in the agricultural economy of Far North Queensland. Operating from the regional township of Tully, located on the Bruce Highway and renowned for its high annual rainfall, the company manages a complex network of locomotives, maintenance vehicles, contractors, and field operations that support the harvesting and transport of sugar cane across the district.

For many years, locomotive scheduling and operational coordination relied primarily on paper-based run sheets and radio communications. While effective, these traditional processes presented opportunities to improve operational visibility, information sharing, and real-time decision-making.

Tully Sugar

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation, Tully Sugar recently partnered with the Sugar Research Institute (SRI) to implement an electronic consignment platform known as Binsights. The system forms part of a broader Queensland sugar industry initiative, with several mills progressing from trial deployments into production environments.

Selecting a Mobility Platform Built for the Rail Environment

The rollout of Binsights required a reliable mobile technology platform capable of performing in one of the most demanding operating environments: the locomotive cab.

The solution needed to securely mount and power rugged Samsung tablets while withstanding the constant vibration, movement, and harsh operating conditions experienced across the rail network. After evaluating various options available on the market, Tully Sugar selected Strike's enterprise mobility solution.

According to Alan-Frank Vecchio, Analyst/Programmer at Tully Sugar Limited:

"After researching various tablet cradles, the Strike product and accessories stood out from the crowd due to the construction, suitability and robustness to be used in a high vibration environment like a train."

By combining rugged tablet devices with secure locking mounts, integrated charging capability, and heavy-duty mounting hardware, the deployment provided operators with a reliable digital workspace that could withstand the realities of daily rail operations.

Delivering Real-Time Operational Visibility

While initially deployed to support the rollout of the Binsights electronic consignment platform, the tablet solution has evolved into a broader operational visibility tool. Alongside the Binsights implementation, Tully Sugar's internal technology team developed a custom application that provides real-time visibility of locomotives, maintenance vehicles, and harvesting contractors operating throughout the district.

Tablet Cradle for Trains

By bringing critical operational information together on a single mobile platform and placing it directly in the hands of field personnel, Tully Sugar has improved situational awareness, enhanced communication, and streamlined fleet coordination across its geographically dispersed operations.

As Alan-Frank Vecchio explains:

"We have written in-house an application to mirror our GPS tracking of our locos, vehicles, harvester contractors etc. and from an end user point of view is invaluable."

The result is a connected operational environment that enables teams to move beyond paper-based workflows and radio updates toward more informed, data-driven decision-making.

Expanding the Deployment Across the Fleet

Following the success of the initial locomotive rollout, Tully Sugar expanded the deployment into its track repair vehicles.

The proven combination of rugged Samsung tablets, secure vehicle-mounted docking systems, integrated power delivery, and theft-deterrent mounting components provided a consistent mobility platform that could be deployed across multiple operational environments.

Expanding the Deployment Across the Fleet

This expansion demonstrates how the organisation has been able to standardise mobile technology across its fleet while supporting a growing range of digital applications and operational workflows.

Supporting the Future of Australian Sugar Operations

The Tully Sugar project demonstrates how purpose-built mobility infrastructure can play a critical role in digital transformation initiatives within industrial and agricultural environments.

While software platforms such as Binsights provide the intelligence layer, their success ultimately depends on reliable hardware capable of delivering information where it is needed most, inside locomotives, maintenance vehicles, and field operations.

By deploying rugged mobile technology designed specifically for demanding environments, Tully Sugar has established a foundation for greater operational visibility, improved communication, and more efficient fleet management across its transport network.

As Queensland's sugar industry continues to embrace digital technologies, projects such as this highlight the importance of combining innovative software with enterprise-grade mobility solutions that can perform reliably in real-world operating conditions.

Commenting on the project, Lindsay Ward, General Manager at Strike, said: "The Tully Sugar deployment demonstrates the growing demand for enterprise-grade mobility solutions capable of supporting mission-critical operations in some of Australia's most challenging working environments. As more industrial organisations adopt digital technologies in the field, having rugged, reliable mobility infrastructure becomes essential to ensuring those systems deliver value where the work actually happens."
