August 2021 – New QLD Mobile Phone Detection Cameras Catch Hundreds on First Day of Roll Out

Brisbane, August 09, 2021 – Hundreds of motorists were caught using their phones in spite of the fair warning drivers were given ahead of the new Queensland road camera roll out. A total of 366 warning notices were given to drivers caught using their phones, whilst 51 warning letters to those not wearing a seatbelt.

It was reported that 166 deaths in Queensland this year of 2021 were caused by road accidents. The government has tightened the restrictions for mobile phone usage whilst on the road to prevent further fatalities. Motorists can be fined up to $1,033 and receive 4 demerit points for using their mobile phone illegally whilst on the road starting 1 November.

The new rules prohibit a driver from holding a mobile phone or having it on any part of their body, such as their lap. However, open and P2 licence holders are allowed to use their mobile phones hands-free, for example, in a cradle attached to the vehicle. Hands-free use of mobile phones includes answering calls, using navigation apps, skipping a song, or accepting/completing a trip as a rideshare driver – provided that the placement of the phone does not obscure the driver’s view of the road.

“In this generation, smartphones are designed with features not just for entertainment but also for work and connectivity.
