What is the Best Cradle for Your Smartphone-based ELD?

What is ELD?

A new mandate requires commercial trucks operating on US highways and roads to use an ELD (Electronic Logging Device).

ELD replaces the traditional pen and paper way of logging data. Commercial drivers now use ELD to digitally prepare hours-of-service (HOS) and records of duty status (RODS), meaning no more paperwork! Management of data is within real time as well. With the ELD mandate, presenting data during roadside inspections are made easier via two options: telematics and local transfer.

What information are required to be recorded on an electronic logging device?

  • Date
  • Time
  • Location Information
  • Engine Hours
    • Vehicle Miles
    • Identification Information for the Driver, Authenticated User, Vehicle and Motor Carrier

To comply with the ELD mandate, fleet managers can opt to have hardware installed in a vehicle or use handheld devices. FMCSA allows an electronic logging device to be on a smartphone and other wireless devices. When choosing a handheld device, you’ll be needing a ruggedized-enterprise device that has durability and can withstand harsh environmental conditions. Panasonic, Motorola, and Samsung offer some mobile device options for ELD such as the Zebra TC56, Panasonic Toughbook FZ-L1/FZ-T1, and Samsung Tab Active.
